It’s estimated that at least one in four people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year which indicates how common it is to experience difficulties relating to depression, anxiety, and stress.

Way Forward offers talking therapies for a range of common mental health conditions. We are here to support, listen and guide you through your problems. Below you can find more information on the common mental health conditions we support.

Talking Therapies

CBT-Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy with Adults, Children, Young People, Families
CBT is a collaborative therapy, which helps to identify and explore the link between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Often unhelpful ‘vicious’ cycles develop which serve to maintain your problem(s). CBT mainly focuses on the ‘here and now’; whilst past events and experiences will be considered during therapy, overcoming current difficulties are at the root of the sessions. Working with your therapist, CBT will help you change unhelpful behaviours, or thinking patterns, or both of these. This approach will also help you to develop practical self-help strategies to manage and reduce your current difficulties.

ACT-Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with Adults, Adolescence and Families
ACT is a form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which utilises a number of different techniques to enhance psychological wellbeing. Key messages in ACT relate to accepting what cannot be changed and committing to action to make a life worth living. The objective of ACT is not to eliminate or change difficult feelings but instead encourages people to develop a more accepting and compassionate relationship with their experiences. Mindfulness techniques are an integral part of ACT and encourage being present with the moment and developing more awareness and control over negative thoughts and feelings.

TF-CBT- Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Adults, Children, Young People
Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment model designed to assist adults, children, adolescents, and their families in overcoming the negative effects of a traumatic experience.
This evidence-based method has been proven effective for treatment after multiple traumas or a single traumatic event, and therapists trained in TF-CBT are frequently able to help people experiencing the emotional effects of trauma address and resolve these effects.

EMDR for Adults and Children and Young People (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables adults and children and young people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that is the result of trauma and attachment wounds.
EMDR is effective in treating many issues including but not limited to, grief and loss, athletic performance issues and mood and anxiety disorders, including depression,  anxiety, phobias, and panic disorder.

MI-Motivational Interviewing
"Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is intended to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a change goal by eliciting and exploring an individual’s own arguments for change.” Stephen Rollnick and William R. Miller, (2010)

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
Critical Incident Stress Management, or CISM, is an intervention protocol developed specifically for dealing with traumatic events. It is a formal, highly structured, and professionally recognised process for helping those involved in a critical incident to share their experiences and emotions, learn about stress reactions and symptoms.

Facilitating reflective practice groups
Reflective practice groups provide a valuable and focussed space for staff members to reflect, observe, process and learn in relation to their experiences at work. They can provide a supportive and developmental space for people to explore and understand their interactions, clinical decision making, team dynamics and the emotional impact of work, amongst other things.

Specialist Counselling with Adults, Children, and Adolescents
Counselling is a process that provides the opportunity to talk about the difficulties you are experiencing in a non-judgemental, confidential and safe environment.
It is structured, collaborative work where we work together to help you reach a greater understanding of your situation and find coping mechanisms. Counselling can help you discuss difficult issues such as bullying at school or work, the breakup of a relationship, or loss of a job.
